The Club

Southerndown is a traditional private members club that boasts all the facilities you would expect to find at one of Wales finest championship courses.

What is Southerndown like as a Club?

If you asked ten different members you would probably get ten different answers. But everyone would agree – it’s a Club worth joining!

  • a Private Members’ Club with a tradition going back over a hundred years
  • a prestigious course – one of the finest gems in Wales
  • a quaint, old-fashioned clubhouse with a warm, charming atmosphere
  • a tough golfing challenge to test the best - and a haven of relaxation for golfers of all abilities
  • traditional in its standards - and at the same time modern in outlook
  • plenty of social or competitive golf, to suit everyone’s taste
  • a good social life with friendly company

Members like to invite guests and to show off Southerndown to their friends, and many of these guests become members.

Visitors from further afield keep returning, too – drawn by the allure of Southerndown.

It’s easy to join – why not find out more?

Captain's Message

Captain's Message

I am honoured to be elected by the members as Captain of Southerndown Golf Club for 2018-19.

Southerndown is a unique downland course where you can enjoy the magnificent views across the Bristol Channel. Playable all year round on the short crisp grass, so typical of the fairways, our course offers such great value for money on what is a great championship venue.

This year I have organised a number of social and golfing events for the member’s enjoyment. Highlights include the Duncan Putter Dinner with the “housewives favourite”, Sean Holley, fancy dress parties with world class entertainers for Captain’s Weekend and the Summer Ball. During December it is intended to reveal the hidden talents of our membership with a “Southerndown's Got Talent" Night.  The success of these events depends on your support, so come along and join in.

This year the club is also undertaking an away day to Carmarthen Golf Club in May, and for the survivors there will be a tour to Portugal in October.

Southerndown is a very sociable club and new members are encouraged and welcomed to join in weekday swindles or, for the more competitive, you can join one of our teams including Wayfarers and Veterans, or even put your name forward for the 1st & 2nd Teams. The Ladies Section is extremely active with plenty of social and competitive golf, fielding 1st, 2nd & 3rd Teams, as well as Friendly and Senior Teams. For the younger membership, the Junior section is busy with coaching, social and team golf.

I trust that visitors will enjoy the Southerndown Experience and that the course and warm welcome you will receive from members and staff will provide you with a memorable experience.

Ladies Captain's Message

Lady Captain's Message

It gives me great pleasure to serve as Lady Captain for the 2018-19 year. I have played at Southerndown Golf Club and been a member of the Ladies Section since 2004, and during this time I have very much enjoyed playing the course and have experienced great friendships and camaraderie at the club.

The Ladies Section continues to go from strength to strength with many new members of varying ages and abilities. Our ladies have been extremely successful in recent years competing at all levels, but we also enjoy a great deal of social events, including the Strawberry Tea, Bottle Caper Bridge Drives and away trip.

My chosen Charity is Velindre Cancer Centre’s Specialist Nursing, and as well as raising money during my term as Lady Captain, I am also joining Velindre’s West Coast Bike Ride in the Autumn, cycling 600Km from San Francisco to Los Angeles for this very worthy cause.

I have always enjoyed the support of and working with the team at Southerndown Golf Club, and looking forward to working as Lady Captain with John and his office, bar and pro shop teams, as well as Lisa and her wonderful catering crew.

I am also looking forward to working alongside and supporting our incoming club captain John Campbell.

2018 looks likely to be a busy year but I am sure a rewarding year, and I look forward to serving the Ladies Section along with the help and support of my committee and the club as your Lady Captain.
