Club Captain - Update on recent events at SGC

Update from latest events at Southerndown Golf Club.

The 19th and 20th September, Finals weekend.

Saturday saw very testing weather for the first day of finals weekend, but all competitors knuckled down and some very good Golf was played. The lashing rain relented in the afternoon, but it was still a 3 Club wind.

Sunday saw the last 4 finals to be played and the change in the weather was amazing.

Congratulations to all of the finalists, and of course the winners. All the results and photos have been posted.

One disappointment was the cancellation of a couple of finals due to availability of players. It has been decided that from next year, if you reach a final and are unavailable due to any other reason than medical, you will not be ineligible to enter the boarded competition the following year. This reflects the gravitas of reaching a final and not competing in what should be the most important Club celebrations of the golfing calendar. Let’s get Finals Weekend back as one of the most important dates in our calendar.

To help address this issue, the Committee is considering introducing a longer interval between the semi-finals and the official Finals Weekend. This would provide greater flexibility for certain finals to be played in advance of the designated weekend, subject to the approval of the Club Captain upon request. The intention is to ensure that all finals are completed before or during Finals Weekend, thereby preserving the integrity and significance of the event. (For both yours and Jamie’s consideration)   

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to our Director of Course, Julian Kelly, for attending the course at first light on both days to rake all fairway bunkers. This dedication, together with the greenkeeping team’s customary weekend course preparation, ensured the course was presented to an exceptional standard despite the challenging weather conditions.

I would also like to extend my thanks to Handicap Committee Member, Mike Brady and Director of Golf, John Peters, for officiating the men’s matches. In addition, I am most grateful to all those who generously volunteered their time to caddie or just came up to support the finalists, your contributions helped ensure a memorable and prestigious occasion for all involved.   

Divoting Evening 21 September

We had a very good turnout of members for the event and with Julian and Llew taking charge of the tractors we managed to cover both 9's in around 90 minutes. The club provided a complimentary drink and food after, so if more members would like to join in for the next one, the reward is worth it.

Finally, we are beginning to find a lot of range balls around the course, Please, Please use range balls on the range and proper golf balls on the course.
