Bulletin 39 - the finale

Duncan Putter 1998 - 2014
So that's it! Another Duncan Putter over - my 17th and last one.
It's been a lot of work, but I've been lucky - most of mine has been done indoors in a warm office. Think of those outside: the referees, organised by Peter Baxendale; our starters, especially the long-serving early-riser Ray Griffiths; the course officials, more than 50 Southerndown members who have been persuaded and cajoled by Ted Parker into standing in the wind and rain for hours on end, year after year, ensuring that the competition runs smoothly and to time.
My thanks also to Head Professional, John Peters, and his assistants who hand out the cards and process the scores; not forgetting, too, our caterers under Lisa and Tony and bar staff under Rob who provide the refreshments that keep us all going and revive us after being outdoors.
But most of all I would like to thank our Course Manager, Andrew Mannion, and his team of hard-working greenkeepers - the forgotten heroes! A good golf course doesn't just happen; it's the product of 365 days of continuous care and preparation - and no small measure of skill.
Andrew is the only member of staff who has been at Southerndown longer than I have, and since he took charge 7 years ago the course has improved steadily to the point where its quality is universally acknowledged. One measure of this is that, in addition to the Duncan Putter, Southerndown is staging a Senior Open Qualifier in July and the Home Internationals in August. These prestigious events would not come to Southerndown were it not for Andrew's expertise.
A final thank you to all the competitors I have met: 17 x 66 = 1122 (I think), although many have played more than once. Without you there would not be a Duncan Putter. You have entertained us all with some great golf.
So, a final goodnight and farewell - and thank you for following my bulletins. I hope you have enjoyed them!
Alan Hughes
