Bulletin 14 -Best and Worst of Day 1
Best and worst ... Some of the golf played. No embarrassing details -you know who you were!
Other best and worst:
Best ... Good spirits shown by most competitors despite foul conditions.
Worst ... The weather.
Best ... Seeing the youngest competitor play the round of his life.
Worst ... Slow play ( - where have I heard that one before?)
Best ... Herculean efforts of volunteers out on the course.
Best ... Three drenched referees.
Worst ... Having to ask them to go out for several hours in the cold and wet.
Best ... The cheerful comments of players to course officials - helped to keep their spirits up.
Worst ... ?
Best ... Lisa's breakfast.
Worst ... Not having time for Lisa's lunch!
Best ... Competitors who had read the rules beforehand.
Worst ... Competitors who had not:
- Artificial devices ...
- Sheep hoof prints in bunkers ...
- Where to collect scorecard ...
- How to tell the time ...
- Not to take trolleys onto tees or between greens and bunkers ( - really annoys members, that one! )
Best ... The work done by green keepers in preparing a playable course ( - better than 'playable'!)
Worst ... The heavy rain, which puddled on fairways but not on greens ( - says it all!)
And finally:
Best ... The young player, no doubt disappointed at not making the cut, who still came and thanked me for the opportunity of taking part. Do you get that at Augusta, I wonder?
