The Club

Southerndown is a traditional private members club that boasts all the facilities you would expect to find at one of Wales finest championship courses.

What is Southerndown like as a Club?

If you asked ten different members you would probably get ten different answers. But everyone would agree – it’s a Club worth joining!

  • a Private Members’ Club with a tradition going back over a hundred years
  • a prestigious course – one of the finest gems in Wales
  • a quaint, old-fashioned clubhouse with a warm, charming atmosphere
  • a tough golfing challenge to test the best - and a haven of relaxation for golfers of all abilities
  • traditional in its standards - and at the same time modern in outlook
  • plenty of social or competitive golf, to suit everyone’s taste
  • a good social life with friendly company

Members like to invite guests and to show off Southerndown to their friends, and many of these guests become members.

Visitors from further afield keep returning, too – drawn by the allure of Southerndown.

It’s easy to join – why not find out more?

Captain’s Mission Statement

The pinnacle of golf club life is to be elected Club Captain, and I am so proud and honoured that the members saw fit to elect me in 2017.

Southerndown’s uniqueness is plain for everyone to see with its rolling downs, superb views, and drainage allowing exceptional golf on a fantastic course all year round.

This year we will again host the Duncan Putter Competition, with guest speaker for the Dinner being Phil Steele, BBC sports commentator and writer. For a second time, Southerndown has been chosen along with three other local courses to host The Senior Open Championship qualifying matches. It is such a great honour for our Club to host these prestigious events.

My chosen charity for my term of office is Velindre Bowel Cancer Research. This is a research charity dedicated to bowel cancer, which has touched so many of our members and their families. I will dovetail with our President Derrick King who is supporting the same charity, in order to maximise the amount of money we raise throughout the year for this excellent cause.

If you are a visitor to our course and/or website and wish to know more about the club ethos and social scene, please contact John Peters our Director of Golf or myself personally, and either of us would be delighted to spend some time with you.

If you are contemplating joining or changing golf clubs, remember that Southerndown is closed on very few days each year, and even then it may be due to fog or snow and not underlying conditions. So please calculate the cost per round when doing your homework, and I think you will be pleasantly surprised how reasonable Southerndown comes in at.

Lastly, may I take this opportunity to wish members and visitors alike good golfing for the year!

Ladies Captain's Message

Lady Captain's Message

I am very honoured to be Ladies Captain this year for the third time. I have been a member at Southerndown Golf Club for 40 years and love the course with its beautiful views and challenging holes.

I am delighted to say that the Ladies Section is growing year on year and we have lots of competitive and social golf, along with many social functions. We have attracted new lady members through taster sessions. These give ladies the opportunity to experience golf and ultimately take up membership.

I am fortunate also to be the Captain of our 1st Team which is in Division 1 of the Glamorgan and Monmouth League. We have 3 league teams with handicaps ranging from 0 – 18. We are holders of the Welsh Team Championship Plate and hope for more success this year.

We have a strong friendly ladies section of all ages and abilities. As well as Cup Competitions we will have a number of fun events such as a Strawberry Tea, Spud Lunch, Coffee Morning, Bridge Drive, Bottle Caper and Sunday Mixed Golf.

My chosen Charity is Y Bwthyn Newydd, Palliative Care Unit and my Charity Open Day is in June. I have also organised an Away Day at Creigiau Golf Club in May and a 3 day away Trip to the Wiltshire Golf Club, Royal Wootton Bassett in September.

It promises to be a busy but rewarding year and I’m really looking forward to a wonderful year of good golf, great fun and friendship.

Norma Barber.
